What does the screen recording tool do in Cubeless Island?
The screen recording tool lets you capture video of your screen without leaving the browser.
- Recordings are saved directly to Secure Storage as
.webmfiles; nothing is written to your local hard drive. - An optional microphone input lets you record voiceover audio alongside the screen capture.
- A built-in video editor lets you trim, annotate, and caption recordings before saving the final file.
- The tool is accessible from Island Tools or via the Screenshot tool's toggle.
How do I start a screen recording in Cubeless Island?
There are two ways to open the screen recorder:
- Island Tools menu: Click the Island Tools icon in the browser navigation bar and select the screen recording option.
- Screenshot tool toggle: Open the Screenshot tool and switch the toggle from Screenshot to Record.
Once the recorder is open:
- Configure your audio settings (see Permissions and audio setup below).
- Click the record button to begin capturing your screen.
- A live timer displays the current recording duration in the control bar.
What permissions are required to record my screen, and how do I enable audio?
macOS screen recording permission
- On a Mac, you must grant Cubeless Island explicit permission to record your screen via your system settings.
- Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording and enable Cubeless Island.
- A browser restart may be required after granting permission before recording becomes available.
Enabling microphone audio
- Before starting a recording, select the Microphone option in the recorder interface to include voiceover audio in the capture.
- If the microphone option is not visible, check that your browser has microphone access enabled in your operating system's privacy settings.
- Audio from the microphone is embedded directly in the saved
.webmfile.
How do I control a recording that is in progress?
Once a recording starts, a control bar appears with the following options:
- Pause: Temporarily suspend the recording without ending the session. Click again to resume.
- Restart: Discard the current recording and begin a new one immediately.
- Stop: End the recording and open it automatically in the video editor tab.
- A live timer in the control bar shows the elapsed recording duration.
Important: Only one recording session can be active at a time. You must close any open recording preview tabs before starting a new session.
How do I edit and save a screen recording?
When you stop a recording, it opens automatically in the built-in video editor.
What can I do in the video editor?
- Split clips: Trim unwanted sections from the beginning, middle, or end of the recording.
- Text overlays: Add titles, captions, or callout text at any point in the timeline.
- Shapes and stickers: Insert graphic elements to highlight areas of the screen.
- Captions: Add subtitle-style captions synced to specific timestamps.
- Images: Insert static images into the video at chosen intervals.
- Preview: Watch your edited video before committing to a final save.
How do I save the finished recording?
- Click Download in the editor to save the final video.
- The file saves as a
.webmfile to Secure Storage. - After saving, open Secure Storage to locate the file. Resize columns in the file list to view full file names and metadata.
Note: Clicking Download saves the recording to Secure Storage, not to your computer's local Downloads folder. To access the file, open Secure Storage from the Control Center or Island Tools menu.
How do I troubleshoot screen recording issues in Cubeless Island?
- The recording option is greyed out on macOS: Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording, enable Cubeless Island, then restart the browser.
- No audio in the recording: Confirm the Microphone option was selected before starting. Also verify that the browser has microphone permission in your OS privacy settings.
- Cannot start a new recording: Close any open recording preview tabs. Only one recording session can be active at a time.
- Saved file not visible in Secure Storage: Click the Refresh icon inside the Secure Storage window to reload the file list.
