How do I access performance settings in Cubeless Island?
You can open performance settings in two ways:
- Click the main menu icon in the browser navigation bar, hover over More Tools, and select Performance.
- Click the Control Center icon in the browser navigation bar, open Settings, and select Performance in the sidebar.
How does Memory Saver work in Cubeless Island?
Memory Saver puts inactive tabs to sleep, freeing up memory for your active tabs and other applications. This keeps your computer running smoothly when you have many tabs open at once.
You can control how aggressively tabs are put to sleep by choosing one of three modes:
- Moderate: Tabs become inactive after a long period of inactivity.
- Balanced (Recommended): Tabs become inactive after an optimal period of inactivity. This is the default setting for most users.
- Maximum: Tabs become inactive after a shorter period of inactivity, freeing memory more quickly.
Note: Any site added to your "Always keep these sites active" list will not be put to sleep by Memory Saver, regardless of which mode is selected. See Always active sites below for instructions.
How does Energy Saver work in Cubeless Island?
Energy Saver extends your laptop's battery life by automatically reducing background activity and adjusting hardware settings when power conservation is needed.
You can configure Energy Saver to activate automatically under the following conditions:
- When your battery is at 20% or lower: Conserves resources when the battery is critically low.
- When your computer is unplugged: Activates power saving immediately whenever you are running on battery power.
How does preloading pages work, and what are the speed tradeoffs?
The Preload Pages setting speeds up browsing by predicting which sites you are likely to visit and loading them in the background before you navigate to them.
Two preloading modes are available:
- Standard preloading: Preloads a limited selection of pages based on predicted navigation patterns.
- Extended preloading: Preloads a broader set of pages for even faster load times across more sites.
Note: When Extended preloading is enabled and cookies are allowed, the browser may use cookies during the preloading process. It may also communicate with Google servers to mask your identity when privately preloading links.
What general and appearance settings are available for performance monitoring?
The following tools help you monitor and manage browser performance at a glance:
- Performance issue alerts: Enable this to receive notifications when the browser detects performance issues and can suggest ways to resolve them.
- Inactive tabs appearance: When enabled, a dotted circle appears around the favicon of any tab that has been put to sleep, making it easy to identify inactive tabs visually.
- Memory usage on hover: When enabled, hovering over a tab displays its current memory usage. Use this to identify which tabs are consuming the most resources.
How do I prevent specific sites from going to sleep in Cubeless Island?
If a site needs to stay live and up to date in real time (such as a messaging app, live dashboard, or media player), you can exempt it from Memory Saver by adding it to the "Always keep these sites active" list.
To add a site to the always active list:
- Open Performance settings (see Accessing performance settings above).
- Scroll to the General section.
- Click Add next to "Always keep these sites active."
- Select a site from your currently open tabs, or type a URL manually (for example, example.com).
Note: You can add as many sites as needed to this list. To remove a site, return to the same section and click the remove option next to the site's entry.
