Daily Maintenance
Keeping Cubeless Island running smoothly requires regular maintenance. Taking a few minutes each day to perform quick upkeep tasks can prevent bigger problems down the road.
Monitor Tab Memory Usage
Cubeless Island can display the memory usage of each open tab when you hover your mouse cursor over the tab. To do so, go to Settings > Appearance and enable the “Show memory usage on tab hover preview card” option.
When enabled, this feature displays the memory (RAM) usage of a tab and its associated processes. The information appears in a pop-up below the tab when you hover over it.
This feature is useful for identifying which open tabs are consuming a lot of memory on your system, making it easier to close memory-hogging tabs and free up RAM.
Update Cubeless Island
The first important maintenance task is to keep Cubeless Island updated so that you’re always using the most up-to-date version. Updating only takes a minute, and it's vital for getting the latest bug fixes and optimizations. See how to update Cubeless Island here.
Restart Cubeless Island
Another quick maintenance step is to exit Cubeless Island daily. This clears out old processes and gives the browser a fresh start on the next relaunch.
Here's how to restart Cubeless Island:
1. Press ALT + F4 (Windows and Linux) or press and hold Command + Q (Mac) on your keyboard to exit out of the browser.
2. Once closed, launch Cubeless Island again as usual.
Clear Cache and Browsing Data
Over time, Cubeless Island stores temporary internet files, cookies, site history, and other data that can gradually slow things down. Clearing this data gives Cubeless Island a speed boost and keeps it performing optimally. See how to clear your cache and browsing data here.
Troubleshooting Specific Issues
You may run into specific issues like crashing, freezing, or failing to load web pages. Here are some likely causes and fixes:
1. Too many tabs: Depending on your device’s specs, Cubeless Island may slow down with too many tabs open. Try closing out some or most of your tabs to see if that helps.
2. Too many extensions: Similar to having too many tabs open, having too many (or resource-heavy) extensions installed can slow down your system. If your organization supports extensions, try:
- Turning off extensions one by one to isolate the problematic ones.
- Removing and then reinstalling suspect extensions.
To disable extensions, click the Cubeless Island menu icon in the top right corner. Hover your mouse over Extensions and click Manage Extensions.
Click the slider at the bottom-right corner of each installed extension to deactivate it.
To remove an extension, click Remove (instead of clicking on the slider) to remove it from Cubeless Island completely. Then, reinstall it via the Chrome Web Store.
It’s also a good idea to regularly remove any unnecessary or unused extensions.
3. Corrupt files: Do a clean installation of Cubeless Island by completely uninstalling and then reinstalling it. You can see how to download Cubeless Island in our Getting Started guide here.
4. Outdated software: Make sure Cubeless Island and your system software are updated. See how to update Cubeless Island here.
5. Connection problems: Failing to load pages, showing blank pages, or displaying errors instead of content is a common issue in any web browser. Make sure you have an Internet connection and that your routers/modems are working.
If your Internet is working properly, try disabling Island Ad Blocker for the current page and reloading to see if that helps. You can turn it off by clicking the green lightning bolt icon on the address bar and clicking the toggle.
If that doesn't work, ensure Cubeless Island is up-to-date and also clear the cache as outlined here.
6. Troublesome processes: If Cubeless Island doesn't start at all, check Task Manager (Windows), Activity Monitor (Mac), or System Monitor (Linux) to confirm that no "Island" processes are hanging or taking up too many resources.
If so, force close them—depending on your operating system, this option may be called “Stop,” "End Task," "Kill," or “End Process.”
When all else fails, sometimes rebooting your computer is all it takes.
Advanced Troubleshooting Steps
For severe or persistent Cubeless Island problems, you may need to try more advanced troubleshooting methods.
Reset Cubeless Island to Default Settings
Resetting Cubeless Island restores the browser to its original settings, erasing any problematic configurations, extensions, and personalizations you've made.
To reset Cubeless Island:
1. Click the Cubeless Island menu icon in the top right corner.
2. Click Settings, and then click Reset settings towards the bottom of the left-hand menu.
3. Under Reset settings, click Restore settings to their original defaults.
4. In the dialog box, confirm that you want to reset everything.
With this option, all temporary data like caches and cookies will also be cleared.
Create a New Cubeless Island User Profile
If you still have problems after resetting Cubeless Island, the issue may be that your user profile is storing corrupt data.
To start fresh, instead of logging into your saved profile, create a new one via the Cubeless Island startup window by clicking Add profile at the bottom of the window.
You’ll need to use a new email address for the profile. If you don’t have one, you can use the trick outlined here to create variations of your email address.
Alternatively, you can delete your current profile and create a new one using the same email address. To delete a profile, hover over it with your mouse, click the three dots that appear in the top-right corner, and click Delete.
